New Glass Recycling Facility Approved for Sydney

A new 25,000 tonne per annum plate and laminated glass recycling facility has been approved in Penrith with planning and regulatory licencing led by Jackson Environment and Planning Pty Ltd. The facility is being built by 5R Solutions Pty Ltd, a successful New Zealand based company that currently collects and recycles the majority of plate and laminated glass in New Zealand.

5R Solutions Ltd built its first glass crushing and recycling plant in Christchurch in 2009, before establishing another facility in Auckland at the end of 2010. 5R Solutions Pty Ltd is committed to the recovery of glass and to reduce its disposal in landfill.

5R Solutions is now bringing its expertise and services to Sydney, to help glass and glazing businesses better recycle plate and laminated glass. With the assistance of Jackson Environment and Planning Pty Ltd, the company has obtained its planning approval and EPA licence to build its first plant in Sydney (Penrith). The facility will crush glass into a range of particle size fractions to be used as a raw material in the manufacturing of glass wool insulation, abrasives, paints and other industrial products.

A summary of the project was presented at the Australian Industrial Ecology Conference on 21st September 2018. The paper was presented by Dr Mark Jackson, Director, Jackson Environment and Planning Pty Ltd and Mr Chris Grant, Managing Director, 5R Solutions Pty Ltd.
