ReDirect Recycling Pty Ltd is a new Australian company established to help fast track the transition to a Circular Economy in New South Wales. The company is focused on developing and operating integrated resource recovery centres to recover materials that can be used in advanced manufacturing.

In mid-2020, ReDirect Recycling purchased a former resource recovery facility located at 25 Dunheved Circuit in St Marys, in Sydney’s growing west. The site comprised of a large industrial warehouse that had a planning consent for sorting and transferring up to 18,000 tonnes per year of building, construction and other dry waste materials. The site received its planning consent in 2001.

However, prior to the acquisition of the site, the EPA licence had been surrendered by the former owner. Prior to the commencement of operations, ReDirect Recycling had to seek a new EPA licence for the site.

To assist in seeking the EPA licence, the team at Jackson Environment and Planning Pty Ltd were engaged to prepare the EPA licence application. The EPA licence application prepared included two key supporting documents, including an Operational Environmental Management Plan (OEMP) and a Pollution Incident Response Management Plan (PIRMP).

The OEMP was developed in alignment with AS/NZS ISO 14001:2016 Environmental management systems and NSW EPA’s Environmental Management Systems Guidelines – Risk-based licensing.

The OEMP Plan sets out specific mitigation measures or controls to avoid or minimise negative environmental impacts associated with the operation of the development. The plan addresses the following matters:

• Traffic Management
• Dust and Litter Minimisation
• Noise Pollution
• Non-Conforming Waste
• Stormwater Pollution Prevention
• Emergency Preparedness and Response
• Fire Prevention
• Weighbridge Management
• Pollution Incident Response
• Waste Management
• Vermin and Pest Management

The PIRMP has also been prepared according to best practice and meet all EPA requirements. The plan sets out how the operation will be managed to prevent pollution in the case of an incident.
