JEP Environment & Planning Quarterly Newsletter August 26

A huge thank you to our customers, colleagues and partners for supporting the approval of more than 70 major industrial projects over the last ten years!

We’re extremely grateful for the continued trust and support we’ve received and proud of the expertise and commitment our team brings to every project. As we reflect on the past decade, we’re equally excited for the opportunities ahead and the next ambitious idea we can help make reality.

In this issue, we’re sharing a snapshot of the latest approvals and project outcomes we’ve delivered for our clients, from new facilities and planning approvals to ongoing work across the waste, recycling and industrial sectors.

New Battery Sorting and Transfer Station Now Open in Kings Park

Battery Recyclers Pty Ltd (Battery Recyclers) has opened a new battery sorting and transfer station within an existing warehouse in the Kings Park Industrial Estate. The facility can receive and sort up to 900 tonnes per year of household batteries collected through the B-cycle battery recycling scheme.

The new facility, sorts, packages and temporarily stores the collected batteries in accordance with the Dangerous Goods Requirements, before they are transported to licensed recycling facilities.

We worked with Battery Recyclers to manage the planning approvals process, including the Council pre-lodgement meeting, preparing the architectural and waste management plans, coordinating environmental assessments, and delivering the statutory planning documentation.

The project addresses Australia’s low battery recovery rate (approximately 3%) and the growing demand for safe battery recycling. By providing dedicated sorting and transfer infrastructure, the facility strengthens end-of-life battery management, reduces environmental and fire risks, and supports Australia’s transition to a more circular economy.

New Landscape Materials Supply Facility Approved for Development in Rossmore

A new landscape materials supply facility has been approved for our client at 45 Whitaker Road, Rossmore.

The facility will receive up to 99,000 tonnes per year of Virgin Excavated Natural Material (VENM), Excavated Natural Material (ENM) and mulch from development sites across Western Sydney. Materials will be temporarily stockpiled within concrete storage bays before being transported directly to customers.

The project includes 20 landscape material storage bays, an industrial shed, a hardstand, stormwater management infrastructure, rainwater tanks, boundary fencing, and associated site works.

We at JEP managed the development approval process, including the preparation of environmental assessments, the planning application and negotiations with relevant authorities.

Following the initial determination by Liverpool City Council, the proposal was considered by the Land and Environment Court of NSW. Working closely with our client and Mr Ross Fox of Fishburn Watson O’Brien Lawyers, development consent was granted on 3 March 2026.

The completed facility will create several full-time jobs, support resource recovery through the reuse of excavated materials, reduce waste to landfill, and provide a sustainable source of landscape materials for the Rossmore community.

Approved for development, this property is now for sale (see listing here).

Green Star Audits

We have continued to expand our work in the Green Star space, as many developers and businesses are now requiring their construction/demolition waste contractors to be Green Star verified.

To become Green Star verified, businesses must undergo an audit of their operations in accordance with the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) Construction and Demolition Waste Reporting Criteria Guidelines to assess whether facilities are accurately tracking, reporting, and recovering their wastes. To maintain verification, businesses must undergo the audit yearly.

As experienced auditors, we undertake these annual audits to verify waste tracking systems, reporting accuracy, facility operations, and recycling performance against GBCA requirements. Through this process, contractors and recycling facilities can demonstrate compliance, improve reporting systems, and maintain eligibility to service Green Star projects.

This work continues to support stronger waste reporting outcomes and improved resource recovery performance across the construction sector in NSW.

Until Next Time

Thank you to our clients, partners and communities for your continued support throughout the year. We’re looking forward to the projects ahead and continuing to help our clients navigate the planning and approvals process.
