A1 Skips Pty Ltd (A1 Skips) is a waste management company that specialises in collecting, sorting and recycling garden organics, concrete, household and building waste in Chinderah, on the North Coast of NSW. The company manages over 400 skip bins of various sizes and a fleet of six skip trucks and two hook trucks.

Due to growing demand for recycling services on the North Coast of NSW, the company sought development approval to expand the capacity of their existing best practice waste transfer station at 16 Naru St, Chinderah from 6,000 tonnes per annum to 15,000 tonnes per annum. The application also sought to increase the site’s operating hours.

Our team at JEP Environment & Planning were engaged to prepare the development application and seek planning consent for the site upgrades.

Our team played a key role in supporting A1 Skips through the two-stage planning approval process, including consultation with Tweed Shire Council and the NSW Environment Protection Authority. We first prepared the Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) report, for approval by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. The SEARs report informed the range of issues that need to be considered before a development application and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) can be prepared.

The second stage was the preparation of the EIS. Our expert team assessed the social, environmental and economic impacts associated with the proposed development as well as determining the site’s capability to support the proposal.

We are very pleased that the development application was approved by the Northern Regional Planning Panel on the 26th October 2023.

The approval will now help A1 Skips to expand their recycling services and better support the community’s sustainability.
