Goterra’s Innovative Wetherill Park Food Waste Recycling Facility Receives Planning Approval and is Open for Business

Goterra is a leading start-up, headquartered in Canberra that diverts up to 13,000 tonnes per year of organic food waste from landfill at their existing resource recovery facility. Due to the growing success of the company, Goterra proposed a new advanced, fully enclosed facility at 132 Newton Rd, Wetherill Park in Western Sydney. The facility will Receives up to 6,000 tonnes per annum of packaged food waste to be processed into high-value protein and compost.

Goterra accepts packaged food waste that is mechanically processed to separate the food from the non-organic/plastic wrapping. The food is then slurried and pumped into their Modular Infrastructure of Biological Services Units (MIBs), a self-contained system accommodating the larvae of the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens. The larvae consume the slurried organics for 10-14 days until they are harvested, along with the manure and processed into two final products: insect protein and frass (insect manure).

The facility is to be constructed inside an existing industrial warehouse building. All waste sorting, processing and depackaging will occur inside this warehouse with advanced odour control and air handling systems installed.

Our expert team at JEP Environment & Planning were engaged by Goterra to assist with the development application and preparing technical investigations. We lead negotiations with Fairfield City Council to address all matters during the assessment phase. Our team also prepared all documentation to secure the EPA licence for the operation, including support during post approvals (construction certificate and occupation certificate stages).

The development application for the warehouse fit out and use as a food waste resource recycling facility, was approved by the Sydney Western Planning Pannel on the 2nd of April 2024.

We are very pleased to note the facility officially opened on the 25th of November 2024 and has commenced its sophisticated process of converting food waste into high value protein and fertilisers, which can be used in a range of stock feeds and other farming applications.
