Over the past decade, we at JEP Environment & Planning have worked closely with Grima Recycling as their Resource Recovery Facility grew in success.
Grima Recycling, located at 88 Redfern St, Wetherill Park collects paper, cardboard and plastic films from various businesses including supermarkets, shopping centres, major retailers and local shops. Grima Recycling sorts, bales and transports these materials for use in the manufacturing of new cardboard and plastic products.
In 2016, we led the planning approval process to expand recycling operations from 28,000 to 75,000 tonnes per annum, including authorisation for the facility to accept plastic film. To support the increased capacity, the development application incorporated a second baling line and a dedicated undercover bale storage area. Additionally, approval was secured for upgrades to the stormwater system, fire management infrastructure, and car parking. We also led two Development Approval Modifications in 2019 and 2021 as their business continued to expand.
In recent years, Grima Recycling has focused on meeting the needs of Sydney’s industrial sector, developing smarter, more strategic approaches to recover value from waste, reduce landfill reliance, and support the circular economy. To help industrial operators move beyond basic bin collection services, Grima Recycling has been implementing on-site baling and compacting equipment. This enables businesses to process cardboard, plastics, and other recyclables more efficiently while maximising resource value, reducing transport costs, and streamlining operations.
Industrial recycling contributes significantly to Australia’s sustainability goals. In NSW alone, millions of tonnes of paper, cardboard, and plastics still reach landfill each year. Structured systems that incorporate baling, compacting, and sorting protocols help unlock these materials for reuse, reducing environmental impact and supporting industries dependent on recycled inputs.
As industrial recycling evolves, businesses that adopt structured, innovative waste management systems will be best placed to contribute to the circular economy while reducing costs and environmental impact.
