Bin City is a family-owned business located in Albion Park Rail, south of Wollongong. The business commenced operations in 2017 and supplies a range of skip bins for hire throughout the Illawarra – from Helensburgh to Gerringong and to the Southern Highlands, Appin and Nowra.
Bin City currently has over 180 skip bins ranging in sizes and service a range of clients including project management companies, developers, builders and home renovators.
To support the growth and expansion of the business, the team at Jackson Environment and Planning Pty Ltd were engaged to seek a new development consent for the operation. The application prepared sought approval for the operation of a waste transfer station, accepting up to 15,000 tonnes of waste per year for recycling.
Building and other dry wastes are received in skip bins and are tipped, inspected and are then sorted into a range of material categories for off-site recycling in an indoor environment. Materials recycled includes masonry, clean timber, steel, aluminium, copper, batteries, plasterboard, cardboard, soils, garden organics and general solid waste. These materials are stored in designated bays and are transported to processing facilities for further recycling.
To ensure that the development complies with contemporary standards for waste transfer stations, a number of site upgrades have been proposed. These include a misting system for dust control in the main building; awning structures over storage bays for recycled product; new Enviropods for insertion into stormwater pits for protecting stormwater; new parking arrangements; a new weighbridge; weighbridge officeand improved landscaping. The upgrades aimed to equip the site to increase recycling, with improved controls in place to protect the environment.
The planning application was classified as integrated development, and was also assessed by the NSW Environment Protection Authority. To address EPA requirements, a weighbridge has been included in the application as required under Clause 36 of the Protection of the Environment (Operations) Waste Regulation 2014.
The development application for expansion of recycling operations on the site was approved by Shellharbour City Council under DA0365/2020 on 17 February 2021. The approval will now allow the business to grow and provide improved recycling services for the Illawarra.
