Proposed Edgar Street Recycling Centre

Platinum Waste Pty Ltd (Platinum Waste) propose to establish the Edgar Street Recycling Centre to recycle construction and demolition waste (C&D) at 269 Edgar Street, Condell Park, NSW 2200. A total of 5,750 tonnes of C&D building materials will be received and sorted each year, with the final products sold back to the construction market or for reuse. The operational activities include pre-sorting larger material with an excavator before transferring building materials into a hopper using an excavator where it enters a conveyor sorting line. Screens, magnets and blowers are used to assist manual sorting. The screened material is conveyed to two picking stations, where the manual sorting of building materials is completed. The picking stations are located external to the industrial building and will be fully enclosed. Recovered materials are expected to include aggregates, timber and cardboard. The Proposal will help boost the recycling of C&D waste in NSW.

As part of the development, alterations will be made to an existing industrial building, Industrial Building 2, as well as a change of use into a C&D Waste Sorting Facility. Industrial Building 1 will be used for general storage and vehicle parking and Industrial Building 2 will house the C&D building materials sorting plant equipment. The Site has three metal clad demountables that will be used by Platinum Waste as offices and other amenities, with these propped to be regularised. Alterations include the installation of concrete bunkers, new stormwater infrastructure, a 12m above-ground weighbridge, water tanks, waste sorting machinery and an awning to cover hooklift bins located externally of Industrial Building 2.

The Site is located within the Canterbury – Bankstown Council area on IN1 General Industrial zoned land, which is compatible with the Proposal. The development will assist in creating jobs and boosting economic growth within the Sydney Region. The project will inject approximately $1 million during construction and $1 million/year revenue from ongoing operations.

The design of the development proposes several sustainability initiatives to protect the local environment. These are:

  • Recycling of C&D building materials means less waste in the environment. This supports the circular economy;
  • The operational activities will enable sorted C&D building materials to be used again in construction activities or in further recycling processes;
  • The site has a fully sealed hardstand to prevent the possibility of contamination of the environment, and allowing all weather access;
  • Industrial Building 2 will be bunded to contain all firewater in the unlikely event of a fire;
  • All stormwater runoff will be intercepted by the new stormwater infrastructure to ensure no polluted water enters council drainage system; and
  • Noise and air quality controls within the building to avoid impacts on neighbours and sensitive receptors.

Neighbour and community feedback is being sought on the proposal. More information can be found in:
