Expanded Paper, Cardboard and Plastics Recycling Facility Now Operating in Sydney’s West

A newly expanded recycling facility for paper, cardboard and plastic film is now operating in Wetherill Park, with planning, licensing and infrastructure funding led by Jackson Environment and Planning Pty Ltd. The planning approval allows an expansion of recycling provided on the site, from 28,000 tonnes per annum to 75,000 tonnes per annum. The project has been approved by the Sydney Western City Planning Panel.

The facility is located at 88 Redfern St, Wetherill Park and is owned and operated by the Grima Family. This business, known as Grima Recycling takes in loose paper, cardboard and plastic films collected from businesses, such as supermarkets, shopping centres, major retailers and local shops. Grima Recycling then sorts, bales and transports off-site these materials for use in the manufacturing of new cardboard and plastic products.

Since the business commenced on the site in 2009, the business rapidly grew, and it was soon realised that the site will need expanding to cope with the demand for recycling services. Planning approval was obtained to expand the amount of materials that can be received, including a second baling line within the warehouse and a specialised undercover bale storage area to help increase the operational capacity of the site. Approval was also obtained for upgrades to stormwater, fire management systems and car parking across the site. The approval also enables the facility to accept plastic film for recycling.

Upgrades to the facility are now complete, and the business is well placed to better support businesses in Sydney to recycle paper, cardboard and plastic film. The facility will help achieve a significant reduction in solid waste to landfill and assist the NSW Government to reach its recycling target of 70% for commercial and industrial waste by 2021. The project was also supported through infrastructure funding provided by the NSW Environmental Trust.
